The best recappers from Television Without Pity already went on to bigger and better careers writing for various television shows. The best part of the site was the boards which they eventually ruined by ruling with an iron fist.(That is unless you were posting on Damien's 'Charmed' boards, Kim's 'Real World' boards or even TheDJB's 'Roswell' boards. Those recappers always seemed the most relaxed and of course TheDJB went onto a career writing for tv.)Everyone is 'pivoting to video' now.

They're kind of trying to bring something back that no one really is clamouring for. With the exception of Price Peterson's 'Teen Wolf' recaps (I didn't even watch the show his screen shots were just funny) I haven't read a recap of a show in years. By Anonymousreply 17. quoteI used to post at Fametracker, what happened to Wing Chung? She's an owner/mod at Previously.tv under her real name, Tara Ariano.
She's still a cunt, but is far lower-key now and easily ignored. To me the TWoP recaps could be funny but were mostly pointless. The forums on the site were the most important thing. And now, nobody needs recaps when episodes can be watched on demand or whatever. As somebody said above, the recaps were of their time. Reviving them is a waste of money and time.
By Anonymousreply 23. quoteI never understood the point of the recaps. It took longer to read the recap than to just watchShack’s recaps made me laugh until tears came to my eyes.quoteEven though they made tons of money and have retired in Hawaii via capitalism, Tara has written that she's a member of the socialist party. Looks like she's now walking the walk by asking others to share their money with her and her husband and her sourpuss friend.Typical. Gotta love the new socialist movement.
By Anonymousreply 24. I was one of the beloved “Fametracker Cunts” who came to DL when FT closed.
I posted under the name Pachinko but will admit to not remembering other posters except for bstewart, who is memorable for being so fucking annoying. I heard he died of advanced tertiary syphilis.Could Wing, Glark and Sara have really made “millions” from selling TWoP to Bravo? I don’t think that Bravo had millions to give, and for a site that eventually tanked. I would seriously doubt the the site creators made enough to retire in luxury in their 30s.Wing really was a twit, but I assumed it was from dealing with freaks from the internet on a daily basis.
Could not have been easy. By Anonymousreply 29. Bstewart was posting things like, “How DARE you disrespect these beautiful mods who have selflessly provided you a home on the internet, etc etc.” He was the worst. Things got strange when FT closed. Most peope migrated to a message board run by Moldy Tofu, dedicated to Princess Marie Chantal or Greece (whom I have only ever heard of because of said migration).
A smaller number went to the Fametracker Off Topic Zone, where discussion was mostly about how much the other board sucked. It folded quickly.I never thought I’d find a forum as witty as FT’s, but then I discovered DL, which is even better because it’s witty AND cunty! By Anonymousreply 30. quoteI never understood the point of the recaps.
It took longer to read the recap than to just watch the episode. Plus you have to watch the episode anyway to even get what they're referencing in the recaps so it takes twice as long. I remember people saying they printed out all the recaps and read them like a novel.
I thought those people were crazy.I finally broke down and got cable when everything went digital but TWP was how I caught up with HBO shows when people couldn’t tape for me.I also loved Daniel's Charmed recaps. Just something to read while on your break at the cubicle.Fuck the printing/novel bullshit tho by Anonymousreply 40. The best recappers were Potes (I printed out her very long recap of 'Riding the Bus With My Sister' and still crack up laughing reading it), anything with Pamie and/or Stee (but the recaps they did together were priceless especially 'The Facts of Life Reunion') and I loved Kim's recaps of The Real World.
Reading their recaps made me wish I was hating watching it with them because they were wonderfully snarky.Miss Alli was a sanctimonious asshole and a Nazi as a moderator. By Anonymousreply 43.
I remember bstewart and his adventures in various steam rooms in Toronto (or was it Vancouver?). He always got away with trolling other posters because he was best buddies with Wing. The Jennifer Garner thread on Fametracker was unreal.
They hated her so much for leaving her co-star for Affleck. She was a 'master of deception' to them.
Hilarious. And the Britney thread was a trip. There was always a huge Britney fan arguing with a Britney hater for pages and pages.
I've always wondered if it was just one person doing that. By Anonymousreply 45. I got a warning in the PR thread for posting that you could watch PR Australia episodes on YouTube. Another one for admitting in a TAR thread that I hadn't read the previous 20 pages of posts and I would as soon as I had a chance but here's a mistake I noticed blah blah blah. That's when I found out about the section where posters tattled on other posters to the mods and omg, those people were insane.
They thought they were conducting a holy crusade. After that I stopped reading TWOP.I read a few recaps at first, i.e. Survivor when I was watching that but the recaps were just.relentless snark describing each episode in excruciating detail, not very funny but a lot of venom.
They were much too long and the writer seemed invested in making each person as hateful as possible. Maybe the scripted television recaps were better written. By Anonymousreply 46. I blocked Miss Alli on Twitter years ago because of the undeserved praise.
I recall reading one or two articles that others on my TL recommended and they were idiotic. When I said something about how inappropriate she had been toward people on TWOP, and how it spilled into real life in a really ugly way, people who I'm certain knew exactly what I was talking about pretended like they had no memory of it all.I have no idea how she managed to shake off the well-deserved reputation of being a psycho troll. Even that TWOP writer who went on to help Carlos Mencia steal jokes never could shake off her reputation, but somehow Miss Alli did. By Anonymousreply 56. Pamie used to have a blog where she would reveal how shallow and stupid she was. I'll never forget a friend on LiveJournal linking to Pamie complaining about getting dirty looks while on her laptop in Wichita, I think, maybe Topeka.Turned out she had decorated her laptop with an artist's sketch of a suspect and wrote 'RAPEY' on the cover. She insisted that this proves Kansans were rubes and some commenter said 'Maybe they just, you know, have been raped and had to go to the police.'
Pamie went ballistic with indignation. A couple hours later and the post was gone. By Anonymousreply 77. Does Sars own part of PreviouslyTV too?I remember Wing Chun screaming at a poster on FameTracker because she (the poster) was unqualified (according to Wing) to speak about zero population growth. We were all to assume that Wing, who spent all of her time watching stupid shows on television, was THE expert on such subjects. In current times, Tara Ariano's (Wing Chun) Instagram consists of her bragging about how lazy she is and photos showing her lazing about on the couch or about to take a nap in her bed. And posing with her dog (lying down together, of course).
Her Twitter account is filled with rancor about America, the country she voluntarily became a citizen of. By Anonymousreply 84. It was pre-smartphone/tablet. It may honestly even have been before wifi was commonly publicly available. It started because they were having trouble with their servers in the months leading up to their initial buyout (?
Partnership?) with Yahoo TV. They were having slowdowns and page loading errors, couldn't afford to upgrade because the site was circling the drain financially, and they started the clicks thing to save data. I believe that was also part of the reason that you couldn't post live pictures, although that also had to do with a person on the Queer as Folk board that would post porn stills. By Anonymousreply 116. quoteYou could retire the federal debt with that offer. The line would look like Hands Across America.LOL, I'm picturing the line to slap the hysterical woman in 'Airplane'.I liked Kim (who did Real World recaps, and some others) and Joanna ( who did the first seasons of Survivor and The OC). Once Miss Alli took over Survivor recaps around S5, I was out.
If you didn't like who she liked, or hate who she hated, forget it.Got banned by SARS (doesn't rhyme with 'bars', rhymes with 'cunt-hairs') on the boards for the MTV show 'Sorority Life'. I responded to another poster by writing 'You like Betty?' (Or whoever) 'I don't know how you can stand her, she's an obnoxious bitch.'
I was confused at first - was I banned for calling a reality character a bitch? But I guess it was for questioning another poster's taste in characters.
I don't know how the delicate snowflake survived such a reproach. By Anonymousreply 128. You owe me a new keyboard! Also, YMMV, etc. I discovered twop when I used to watch 'Showbiz Moms and Dads' 15 years ago and their threads on it were fucking hilarious.
Some of the RHOC threads were great too but yeah, they took themselves way too seriously and it was a pain in the ass to post and the person who got banned for not liking someone on Sorority Life totally rings true, I remember those threads and I was getting snarked out for disliking one of the teen moms. So not surprising that Wing Chun is a fattish frauish chick. By Anonymousreply 132. I remember you couldn't start a post with 'Um'.R127 I remember the the Quaker Factory discussions in the home shopping threads.I also remember first reading about Josh Duggar molesting his sisters 10 years prior to the news going mainstream, back when the Duggars just had annual new baby specials before 19 Kids and Counting started. My favorite go-to was TV Potluck.
It was pretty liberally modded and had some great, intelligent discussions about TV and culture. I actually wrote a mid-term paper based on info from the thread about LGBT characters on TV.
And the commercial forum was fun pre-DVR when we all still had to sit through commercials.I don't want the recaps. I just wished they had archived the forums. By Anonymousreply 133.
It started in 1997 as a Dawson's Creek recap site. I posted in the mid-00s and stopped before the Bravo take-over.I was banned by both MissAlli and SARS. Pretty sure that deserves some sort of prize. Funny thing though, I emailed Glark about SARS banning me (as I recall, she misinterpreted my sarcasm at moderator in one of the bug/tech threads) and he said 'No problem' and unbanned me. Too bad he was more techy than an actual mod, he was pretty cool compared to the others.
By Anonymousreply 145. quoteI liked GustaveThis just brought back a memory from their other site HissyFit. Someone opened a thread questioning if AA was the only model for recovery and sobriety. The poster was a very nice person, and had been popular and well-liked on the board. Her husband had stopped using drugs but he didn't attend AA meetings. The original post was respectful to AA, but it opened a discussion about it being the ONLY way to sobriety. This poor woman had no idea what was coming.
Because Gustave thought AA was the only way, so many other people began attacking this woman and her 'junky' husband, and Tara (Wing Chung) banned the woman for 'attacking her staff'. That discussion was unnecessarily so nasty, and to this day I still occasionally remember how that person was treated for no good reason. By Anonymousreply 146. When Al Lowe took over the Gilmore Girls forum and recaps, I felt so sorry for her. Pamie had left the place a shambles after she used her recap to bitch for 5000 words about how awful the TWoP GG fans were. She had just started her blog and I guess some TWoPers made comments she didn't like. So she does the totally sane thing and invents some Gilmore Girls fan named Stacey, written by Pamie as 'Stac(e)y' throughout the whole rant, and attacked that sockpuppet character. The problem was that there really WAS a user named Stacey, and someone had once spelled her name 'Stacy.'
The girl was quiet and friendly and totally blindsided by this attack, because she'd had nothing to do with Pamie's dippy blog. Almost no one had any idea what Pamie was going on about. Then Sarah jumped in and said no, it was a fake name and not about the real Stacey at all. I couldn't believe they allowed Pamie to keep writing for them after that.It was 12 years ago.
I can't believe I actually remember this. By Anonymousreply 160. I stayed out of the forums but loved the recaps.
I read West Wing, Buffy, and Trading Spaces religiously. They were often better than the actual episodes.Re: printing the threads. This was very much pre-smartphone and tablet access being ubiquitous. At the time, I was a smoker so I would copy and paste all sorts of interweb content into Word and print it at the end of the day so I’d have stuff to read when I was outside smoking. The worst thing about TWoP was that each recap could be split across 35 pages on their website. These were the days when page clicks were important and they were the worst at breaking up their content. They purposely would not let you click a button to view everything on one page.
By Anonymousreply 165. quoteI discovered twop when I used to watch 'Showbiz Moms and Dads' 15 years ago and their threads on it were fucking hilarious.Me too, me too! There were actually a number of people from the show who tried to post on the forum (Debbie Klingenskort, the pageant kid's mom, a couple of the Nutter kids, Big Jordan) but the whack job mod kept banning them all. For what, I have no idea. They were a hell of a lot more polite than I could have been given the merciless mocking they were getting there.
I suppose the mod couldn't stand them getting all the attention instead of His Royal Hinnie. That place was insane then. I can't even imagine what it would be like in today's 'offended by everything' culture.
By Anonymousreply 166. R166 Ha, Klingenskort! I lost my shit when someone called Mrs. Nutter a handsome woman. Duncan was so ka-weeny and ridiculous. I never knew they tried to post, that's pretty fucked up they weren't allowed to. Klingenskort's mom was the worst.
'he's performing at the Tampa Bay Bucaneers Stadium!' Poor kid, he's still at it, I guess.Shane Klingensmith is on Facebook. Join Facebook to connect with Shane Klingensmith and others you may know. Facebook gives people the power to share and makes the world more open and connected. By Anonymousreply 170. I do remember one RHNY thread that cracked me up.
It was after Aviva flew to some island to see the girls but not without making a huge fuss about how much she hates flying, etc and that she was only able to do it because her hubby Reid was her tranquilizer, etc. When she and Reid got there she was telling the ladies how they owe Reid their gratitude for him getting her there. Someone on the thread called him 'Reid-who-must-be-approached-on-bended-knee' It was perfect because that Afghan dog looking bitch really WAS going on about how grateful they should be to him. Then Bravo started moderating it a lot more and it got lamer and lamer.
By Anonymousreply 173. quoteThere were actually a number of people from the show who tried to post on the forum (Debbie Klingenskort, the pageant kid's mom, a couple of the Nutter kids, Big Jordan) but the whack job mod kept banning them all. That was always a head-scratcher, when they would ban people from actual shows. The mods were such kill-joys. I don't read over there very much, but last year on Previously.TV I saw that the woman from Rehab Addict posted and wrote very informatively about a subject people seemed confused about. Unfortunately the posters, not even a moderator, insulted her and told her to leave the forum. It was very rude and very Stockholm Syndrome.
By Anonymousreply 179. Oh but I remember that one of the chicks from 'Cathouse' that HBO show about the bunny ranch used to post on TWOP!
And she was one of the kookier chicks and everyone was very cool to her though she was shilling some psychic book she wrote or some new agey thing. I guess cause it wasn't one of the big Bravo shows they let her through.
I would occasionally see Strega and some of the other mod's names but I think my forums were modded by Glark and Howard and they were fairly cool on the lesser watched shows. By Anonymousreply 182. quotePamie joined roller derby to overcome Stee walking out on her. She's now a staunch, angry feminist.I saw a video of (a very giggly) Pamie on a PBS show promoting her book 'Notes to Boys', which was a compilation of love letters she had written to boys she liked, often unrequited, when she was a teenager. She described herself as aggressive and relentless, stalkerish sometimes toward these boys with her letters sent to them that included erotica.
I don't understand how she reconciles that book with her continual drumbeat against male aggression. Reverse the sexes, and I don't think she would think a teenage boy stalking girls and sending them erotic letters would be giggle-worthy, let alone book worthy.
By Anonymousreply 184. I don’t recall the mod’s name r175. She just dropped in on a thread I frequented one day and hammered some random poster.
Everyone was bewildered because she wasn’t a mod for that thread and the guy didn’t do anything wrong. She later deleted her post and the post she had responded to.It was so obnoxious I had to check out her bio and the threads she was a mod on and apparently eviscerating random posters was part of her shtick. Her regular posters thought it was HILARIOUS. I don’t recall her name or the shows she recapped, though.
By Anonymousreply 192. quoteThe moderating didn't bother me; it kept threads on topic and spared readers from tangential conversations and posters' personalization of TV characters. That was very much dependent on which board you were on. The Roswell boards were always fun. The Real World boards were always fun. If there was moderating it was necessary but that rarely happened unless someone 'signed' their posts but every mod and even the posters got annoyed with that.
The 'Roswell/Survivor Island' thread was a lot of fun to read through. Everyone knew the show was shit and they all went in heavily on making fun of it.The later years Survivor boards were only for the brave. There is a reason why anytime anyone brings up TWOP there are always people complaining about Miss Alli.years.
later.I remember the 15 x 15 rule and I remember when you had to read literally every post on a thread before you commented. If you really wanted to comment on a show you had to do it fast and early as soon as the board opened. By Anonymousreply 194. Yeah, the TWOP rules were all sound ideas.
'No boards on boards' kept discussions on topic, for instance. I never noticed heavy-handed moderation in any of the forums I used to browse. But I only followed a handful. The site was a victim of its own success. Weird little cults of personality grew up around the recappers, and interesting discussion was diluted by a steady stream of new posters who didn't have much to say but took a long time to say it.I wish I knew of a current site similar to TWOP. PTV is dull and reddit is choked with stupidity.
By Anonymousreply 201. quoteI wonder if Howard needed psychiatric care after the forums shut down. Bitch was still moderating with minutes to go.Made me laugh.I agree that Wing was the resident grouch, but I did appreciate her smackdown on threads where people just listed things, e.g., writing one's favorite Friends characters in order of favoritism and with no elaboration, just the names. Wing hated lists, and I don't blame her. It's boring when people just list things without commentary. I see that a lot around here, unfortunately.
By Anonymousreply 220. Wing Chun AKA Tara Ariano has become pretty radical for someone who made a fortune watching hours of junk TV while eating junk food. From her Twitter, a call for violence.:quoteIt is moral to make your elected representatives feel unsafe in their homes when they wage war upon you.Watch out, Congress! I admit that tweets like this make me uncomfortable. I don't agree with people advocating for violence. Hopefully, she and her followers are too lazy, and too busy eating to actually do any harm.(Maybe she should have remained a Canadian citizen.) by Anonymousreply 225. quoteThat was always a head-scratcher, when they would ban people from actual shows.
That does seem extreme.
I do remember a couple of threads I was on where cast members showed up and it changed the whole tone of the postings. A few posters would always defer to the cast member as if they had some form of authority and were now the unofficial leader of the board. It could be very annoying. In particular I remember that an uncle of one of the cast members from Frat Life showed up. He was a regular web surfer and member of different forums on the web (but not TWOP) so he was not unfamiliar with how nasty things could get.
He was ready to take charge and put everyone in their place if they got out of line. I have to admit it was enjoyable to watch him be drummed right off the board.
By Anonymousreply 229. I remember Survivor Sucks and that thread about Miss Alli. I agreed with some of the mod policies on the TWOP boards in the beginning. But, they got too heavy handed later on and people left the boards in droves to post on IMDB or other sites.
A lot of crap went on IMDB, but I miss those boards because it was fun to read certain theories for certain shows.I also recall that some of the mods were assigned to monitor reality show threads and in some case the mods didn't watch the shows. Howard admitted a couple of times that she wasn't watching the Duggar shows. That lead some people to joining Free Jinger. By Anonymousreply 234. I had no idea Miss Alli became Linda Holmes, who used to post a decent bit at Metafilter, came across as reasonable and sane.
She still might post there; I left that community because - haha - it got overrun by moderators' egos, sanctimony, etc.Meanwhile, I looked at Lost recaps for a couple seasons to get another perspective on what was going on, but goddamn were they long-winded. I look around the site a little bit beyond that and saw lots more of that.
The lack of editing took a toll. And the mind-warping stench of egos and drama drove me away from the site in some haste. By Anonymousreply 249. R278, there is a 'MOVIES' category on PTV, in the forum called 'OFF-TOPIC'. Within 'MOVIES' is a section called 'TCM' where people discuss the old movies shown on the Turner Classic Movies channel - there are also sections devoted to current movies that are shown in theaters & on Netflix, as well as on premium TV channels like HBO.Things are hard to find on PTV because there are so many categories (some are 'forums' & some are 'topics' & some are 'shows') & no way to search that I've ever figured out, but everything that used to be on TWoP is probably on PTV.
By Anonymousreply 283. I used to follow Stephen Falk (Stee) on Twitter.
He was on the east coast writing for an NBC show he created that was going to star Dane Cook. After the Colorado movie theater massacre, Dane made a tasteless joke at a comedy club about the people who were murdered. Stee wrote a tweet saying that anyone offended needed to understand that comics needs to be allowed to experiment and work out their material, and should be allowed to say anything in public that they want without repercussions.
He was also very condescending, as if he was explaining things to 6-year-olds. (Of course, he was defending Dane Cook because their show was being produced and he didn't want any backlash.)A couple of weeks later, Superstorm Sandy hit the east coast and some people on Twitter were making clever jokes about it, and Stee was so angry and began lecturing everyone about how serious this storm was and that people were dying!Hypocrite, much?(And that show ended up cancelled before any of the episodes aired.) by Anonymousreply 285. I've seen the recapper Potes mentioned a few times in this thread and agree she was pretty funny. Her recaps of 'America's Next Top Model' were consistently hilarious. In its early seasons, ANTM took itself seriously and believed it could launch another Tyra/Cindy/Giselle.
But Potes had the foresight to realize the show was merely a beta version of 'Drag Race'.Jacob's 'Gossip Girl' recaps started out occasionally insightful but quickly spiraled into being both self-congratulatory and convoluted.R29, did BStewart really die of syphilis or was that just a bit of shady humor? quoteIt is funny how they were there for the dawning of the internet and had a hugely popular website but didn’t properly capitalize on it.I thought they sold their site to Bravo for a lot of money. Wing, Glark and the always-miserable Sars.Pamie often referred to herself as a nerd. In that really annoying way that only people who actually are not nerds do. But, she is an urban legend now, because she ended up covered in a male stranger's bodily fluids while getting a pre-natal massage, and she wanted the world to know about it:'This place doesn’t have individual rooms, so you’re in this big room with tents that separate, like a dark funhouse. And I never like the separated tents, because you end up listening to someone else’s massage, because inevitably there’s that person who has no concept of other people who’s like, “Ungh! Ooooooffffunh.”So the guy leads me to my tent section, tells me to take off my robe and climb up on the table and that he’ll be right back. So I do, even though it’s very difficult to climb up on a massage table when you’re eight months pregnant, but I manage to sort of shuffle-scoot between the sheet and the heavy blanket and as I scoot I realize, I’m wet.I’m wet but also, it’s like I found a spot I didn’t dry off somehow after I took my shower.
But I know that’s not possible, because I showered more than fifteen minutes ago. But it’s dark in there, and I’m already on my side, so I kind of rub at where I’m wet, which is all around this part here of my hips and butt and I’m like, “This is kind of like a gel, maybe I got into some lotion or but I don’t know. I can’t feel my fingers, so I’m not sure what I’m touching here. So maybe I’ll just smell it.And it smells like semen. And that is because it is semen.' By Anonymousreply 295.
